# Paragon email invites return a 404 or can't be accepted

> Why a team invite fails when the email already belongs to another Paragon account, and how to free it.

Breadcrumb

## Problem

Paragon email addresses must be unique across all Paragon accounts, not just within one team. If the invited person already created a Paragon account (including a trial) with that same email, clicking **Join Now** in a new team invite can fail. The dashboard often shows a generic 404 instead of a clear "email already in use" message.

## You may see

```
404 | This page could not be found.
```

## How to fix it

* Confirm the email isn't already on another Paragon account. If the invited person ever signed up (including a trial) with that email, they need to free it before they can accept a new team invite.
* Free the email on the old account. Log in to the original account → **Account Settings** → change the email to something like `name+old@company.com`.
* Have a team admin check **Settings → Team members** for a pending invite to that email. If there's one, click `Resend`. If there isn't one, send a new invite to the same work email.
* Accept the new invite in an incognito/private window. Use the latest email only. Don't reuse an old **Join Now** link.

## If it still fails

Open the invite link, then:

1. Open Developer Tools (Chrome: right-click → Inspect, or `Cmd+Option+I` / `Ctrl+Shift+I`)
2. Go to the **Network** tab
3. Check console logs
4. Find any request that is red or has status 4xx (often `/teams/.../invite/...` or `/api/auth/accept-invite`)
5. Share that with [support@useparagon.com](mailto:support@useparagon.com) and one of our support team can investigate it further for you.
